The Sahajanand Laser Technology SUSHRUTA Innovation Award 2011-12

The Sahajanand Laser Technology SUSHRUTA Innovation Award (SIA) is great nationwide competition in India with special promotion to Gujarat students, for the most innovative Medical Device Idea / Prototype by the students.
The objective of the award is to strengthen the innovation in medical device; the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has initiated a project - “Promoting Innovative Clusters (PIC) in India”.
In this context, with the support of Project PIC and the Gujarat based innovative company “Sahajanand Laser Technology Ltd”; the National Bio-Medical Engineering Society (NBES), Ahmedabad is happy to announce the Sahajanand Laser Technology - SUSHRUTA Innovation Award (SIA) 2011-12, an All India Competition for Biomedical Engineering Students, along with a special category for the Bio-Medical Engineering Institutes and Medical Colleges of Gujarat State.
The uniqueness of the award is that students who have new idea and who are working on prototype or idea or already done prior work in the Institute can apply. The jury will select 14 teams and they will get 3 months' time and grant of Rs 40,000/- for each team to work and improve the existing idea / project. The selected groups will be invited to participate in an International Exhibition on Medical Technology and Equipment.

Eligibility Criteria:
The award competition is open for individuals/groups of students (up to 3 students in a group allowed) pursuing any degree (Bachelors / Master Level / Ph.D) under Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology or related subjects from a recognized Indian University / Institution. From the Gujarat category, all the institutions offering Biomedical Engineering Courses at various levels as well as students of Medical Colleges are invited to participate.
The project / idea should be related to Medical Devices / Technology. It may be a continuous research project or a part of it or a new idea / subject.
It is preferred that the participants participate in a group (up to 3 students in a group), although individual participation is allowed.
The last date of applying for the award in prescribed format is with relevant shareable support documents is on or before October 15, 2011.

Award categories:
There will be two categories as under:
National (All India) : Two Prizes will be given under this category. Rs. 50,000/- for the 1st Prize and Rs. 40,000/- for the second Prize. This will be along with the Award Trophy.
1. Gujarat State : The winners under this category will be given Rs. 25,000/- for the First Prize and Rs. 20,000/- for the Second Prize along with the Award Trophy for each.
2. The academic faculty involved in supporting the winning teams will also be awarded with cash prize of Rs. 20,000/- each.

Award process:
The valid entries (In soft copy by email as well as hard copies) along with supporting documents received before the deadline will undergo internal screening and the short-listed entries will be evaluated by a panel of Jury.
A panel of Jury will select 25 best entries (including 7 entries from Gujarat).
Selected participants will be invited to Ahmedabad for making Presentations for which travel costs for one person will be reimbursed.
Out of these 25 presentations, selected 14 participants (at least 4 from Gujarat) will be given a financial support of Rs. 40,000/- each as one time payment for the prototype development.
A group of technical experts will monitor and mentor the participants during the process of prototype development.
The 14 selected groups will be given opportunity to exhibit their prototypes at an Exhibition on Medical Technology and Equipment. All the actual costs for travel for a team of two persons (One Student And One Guide) (Railway A/c 3 Tier/Bus, Up and Down), stay and exhibition will be reimbursed.
The best 2 prototypes out of these 10 exhibits and the best 2 prototypes of the 4 prototypes from Gujarat selected by the panel of Jury will receive Sahajanand Laser Technology SUSHRUTA Innovation Award.
